An article in the July 27, 1913 Providence Sunday Journal suggested a lot more than met the eye! :"Shannock at present is winning. Prosperity has been its portion, and its people are up and doing. Within the last five years it has introduced streetlights,  more than doubled the number of volumes in its library and seen organized a club for entertainment and enjoyment of its men mill workers. Of all the villages between Kingston and Westerly, Shannock is easily maintaining its position as the liveliest."
